How to do Baby Skin Care?

It is very important to keep a baby's skin clean at all times, especially in tropical climates where skin infections take long to heal. It is important to use a soap specially formulated for a baby's skin. Use a soft towel and pat the skin dry rather than rub it as rough towels irritate delicate skins. Apply a little baby cream over the baby's skin after drying and before powdering. Fresh air and sunshine are the best tonics for a baby's skin. Sunshine keeps the skin healthy and attractive, but protect your baby's skin from harsh winds by applying baby cream on the cheeks, forehead, nose and chin which will leave an invisible film over the skin.

When allowing the baby to sunbathe, always protect the eyes and the back of neck from the direct rays of the sun. Special care has to be taken in different seasons. In winter, avoid the use of soap and if the skin is oily, use a mild skin tonic. Heavy creams and moisturizers should be used extensively. Use a little vitaminized face cream for skin care. In summer, wash with baby soap at least twice a week if the child's skin is greasy.

You may use cleansing milk to clean the skin. In the rainy season, soap should be used once a day and the face washed twice a day with tepid water. An oily skin too needs a moisturizer as a lack of moisture encourages tell-tale lines, even on a child's body.

A massage is a must for a child's delicate skin. Massage with baby oil or olive oil for 10 to 15 minutes before the baby's bath. A sunbathe for a short time is very helpful for a baby's skin.

Question: My skin breaks out at the time of my menstrual period. What treatment is advised? While wearing tight-fitting jeans, my daughter gets itchy skin rashes on her thighs and legs. What's the reason?

Answer: Active treatment of the skin, internal treatment with antibiotics, restriction of salt intake, medically supervised therapy to reduce water retention just before menstruation, or possible therapy with hormones may be required to control these breakouts. It is seen that a greater number of skin reactions develop among adolescents who wear trousers with a narrow cut or who wear tight jeans. These include red, itchy and scaling dermatitis, inflamed hair follicles on the front surfaces of thighs and other skin reactions on the thighs and legs.

Apart from a red, itchy, slightly scaling skin eruption confined to the body area covered by jeans, there is also an exaggeration in the area covered by the tight trousers, of already existing skin problems. Always wear loose clothes to avoid further skin eruptions produced by pressure or friction and increased heat and humidity caused by a tight fit. Better still; consult your doctor for treatment.
