Trichomycosis axillaris

Trichomycosis axillaris is a superficial bacterial infection of underarm hair. It is characterised by yellow, black or red granular nodules or concretions that stick to the hair shaft. Initially there is a light red colour which became brownish in time. There are usually no symptoms associated with this. There are small nodules or thickened cylinders attached to the hair which can be seen quite easily.

Patients affected by trichomycosis axillaris present with complaints of a disagreeable underarm odor and a history of hyperhidrosis and poor hygiene. Trichomycosis axillaris occurs in males and females of all races from both temperate and tropical climates. It appears to be more common in men than women but this is because many women shave their underarm hair. They are usually yellow, sometimes red or brown.

This may cause some discolouration on clothing. It is produced by a Corynebacterium. Using antibacterial soaps usually clears the problem. Oral antibiotics such as erythromycin may also be used. Examination reveals the underarm hair to be coated with black, yellow-white or reddish deposits. The fastest way to get rid of the problem is to clip the affected hairs or shave the area.
