Boils (Furuncle) or Carbuncle - Home Remedies To Get Rid of Boils (Furuncle) or Carbuncle

A boil is a skin infection that starts in a hair follicle or oil gland. They are quite painful, particularly in areas where the skin is closely attached to the underlying tissues, such as the nose, ears, or fingers. They usually occur in teenagers and young adults.

Several strains of the bacteria have evolved to be insensitive to antibiotics and can in some serious cases cause disease. Furuncles may occur in the hair follicles anywhere on the body, but they are most common on the face, neck, armpit, buttocks, and thighs.

Anyone can develop boils, especially if they've already had them in the past. But certain groups are at increased risk of developing boils, and should seek medical attention if they notice boils anywhere on their body. Boil skin infections are usually caused by the Staphylococcus bacteria. As your body fights the bacteria, a host of white blood cells enter the site, creating a pus-filled center.

The center of the lump will become yellow or white when it is ready to drain pus. People with multiple boils can develop fever and/or swollen lymph nodes. A boil that keeps recurring is called chronic furunculosis.

Burdock is a member of the thistle family and has been traditionally used for persistent skin disorders such as boils and sores. Betel leaves are a valuable remedy for boils. A leaf is gently warmed till it becomes soft. It is then coated with a layer of castor oil.

The root of the rhubarb plant is antibacterial and astringent and has been traditionally used as a wash and a cream to help boils and skin diseases. Warm moist compresses should be applied three or four times a day over the tender area. This will help to bring the boil to a head and encourage easy drainage.

The bacteria are picked up somewhere and then live on the skin, crowding out the normal, harmless bacteria we all carry. The source of bacteria may be your own family member or your pet.
