What is Erythema Marginatum?
Erythema marginatum (EM) is the disease in which pink rash is obtain on the trunk and insides of the arms and legs and also go for as long as for few months. But never occur on the face. Erythema marginatum is the symptom of rheumatic fever. Rheumatic fever is the disorder mediated through the immune system and also is a throat infection with strep bacteria. It mostly found in childrens between five and fifteen years and occurs in fall, winter, and early spring. EM is an evanescent, erythematous rash occur during rheumatic fever. There are two types of Erythema Marginatum:
- Erythema marginatum rheumaticum
- Erythema marginatum perstans
Causes of Erythema Marginatum
- Bacterial throat infection is the most commom cause of EM.
- Any type of defect in immune system may lead to erythema marginatum.
- Inbalance betweem streptococcus bacteria's antigens and antigens on the body's own cells may cause the rheumatic fever.
What are the symptoms of Erythema Marginatum?
- Rash which composed of pink splotches is obtain on the skin which is not painful.
- Rash is rarely pruritic and not itchy.
- These rashes may transfers from one place to other place.
- Nodules are obtain over the knee and elbow joint which are hard to touch but not painful.
- There may be a problem of pancarditis which is an inflamation that affects all parts related to heart like endocardium, sac containing the heart (pericardium), myocardium and also fever, joint pain.
- During pancarditis period there is frequently damage of heart valves take place.
Erythema Marginatum Treatment
- Penicillin injection is the first step of treatment of rheumatic fever and it must be regular.
- Also there is use of an anti-inflammatory agents like ibuprofen.
- Some medications like diazepam and haloperidol are used for Erythema marginatum treatment.
- There are some other methods like danazol treatment, physical examination and laboratory findings are also use for treatment.
