What is Eosinophilic Granuloma?

Eosinophilic Granuloma (EG) is symptomatic disease and a generic name for a groups of disorders. In this disease abnormal growth of number of immune cells take place. It mainly affects to skull, ribs, mandible, spine and long bones of the body. Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a defect in which these cells simulate with different organs of body and turn into various symptoms. Langerhans cell is the main antigen-presenting cell. LCH also known as eosinophilic granuloma, hand-schuller-christian syndrome, histiocytosis-X, letterer-siwe disease. It oftenly found in childrens under 12 years age. The ratio of male to female is 2:1.

Feline eosinophilic granuloma - Eeosinophilic granuloma also occurs in cats which is known as feline aosinophilic granuloma. In this type of cats some skin diseases are found which are eosinophilic plaque, lip ulcer, collagenolytic granuloma.

Causes of Eosinophilic Granuloma

  • Metabolic problem in reticuloendothelia system is one of the main cause of EG.
  • Smoking & lung scarring are the another causes of eosinophilic granuloma.
  • Skin infection is one of the cause of EG.

What are the symptoms of Eosinophilic Granuloma?

  • Local pain, swelling, eye bulging and tenderness are the common symptoms of EG.
  • Diabetes insipidus, mental deterioration, cough, fever, bone pain, rash, cheast pain and loss of weight are common in adults.
  • Abdominal pain, jaundice, vomiting, limping, headache are common in children.

Eosinophilic Granuloma Treatment

  • Lung transplantation is one of the useful technique in eosinophilic granuloma treatment.
  • Sometimes there may be use of chemotherapy or radiation therapy in which prednisolone and vinblastine are commomly used agents.
  • XRT treatment which is used when there are symptpomatic injury to the regions like spine, skull, or pelvis.
  • Steroids injections such as depomedrol, methylprednisolone is one of the option for other treatment.
  • There are some medications like methotrexate, vinblastine, cyclophosphamide (Cytotoxic agents), etoposide used in childrens.
  • Corticosteroids treatment which include calcium and vitamin D supplements is used to suppress immune function.
  • Surgery is also effective in some cases.
  • Some antibiotics are also given.
  • Breathing techniques are also useful in some patients.
