What is Elastosis Perforans Serpiginosa?

Elastosis Perforans Serpiginosa (EPS) is also one of the skin disease which occurs very rarely. This is one of the skin defect in which abnormal elastic tissue fibre transferred from inner level to the outer level of the skin. In 1927 Fischer discovered EPS. It mostly attacks on face, neck, and upper extremities involving trunk. There are three types of Elastosis Perforans Serpiginosa:

  • Idiopathic EPS
  • Reactive EPS
  • Drug-induced EPS

Causes of Elastosis Perforans Serpiginosa

  • We already know that heat or sunlight is the most affecting factor of any skin disease.
  • External factors such as penicillamine & genetis mutation are the another causes.
  • Infection to the skin through any type of injury.
  • Medication side effect is one of the cause of elastosis perforans serpiginosa.

What are the symptoms of Elastosis Perforans Serpiginosa?

  • Skin gets affected that includes small clusters which are reddish in color and upto 2-5 mm in diameter.
  • In cluster there may be a central pit filled by scaly plug.
  • Usually these patches finds on the back area of neck, arms and very rarely on the face, leg & trunk.
  • Sometimes these spots may be itchy.

Elastosis Perforans Serpiginosa Treatment

  • Tazarotene drugs like retinoid prodrug having anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties are also useful in the treatment of elastosis perforans serpiginosa.
  • There are some surgical methods available like flashlight pulsed dye laser.
  • Freezing technique is useful in which liquid nitrogen is used.
  • Medical therapy like isotretinoin can be useful in EPS.
