What is Dissecting Cellulitis of the Scalp?
Dissecting cellulitis of the scalp one of the inflammatory disease. It is rare, chronic, progressive, suppurative disease of the scalp. It also has the name perifolliculitis capitis abscedens et suffodiens.this disease is linked with follicular occlusion, secondary infection, and deep inflammation. It occurs very rarely between 18 to 40 years age. This disease is mostly affected to the black men rather than the white. It leads to discomfort and cosmetic disfigurement. Generally it occurs in African American men between 20-40 years of age. Its primary inflammatory process is associated with secondary bacterial infection like staphylococcus aureus or staphylococcus epidermidis. It is distinguished from other scalp conditions.
Causes of Dissecting Cellulitis of the Scalp
- The main cause of this disease is unknown.
- But other causes are infections such as bacterial like propionibacterium acnes & hair infections.
- Follicular occlusion like acne conglobata, hidradenitis suppurativa, and pilonidal cysts, a syndrome is one of the cause of DCS.
- Keratin and other organisms that present in the infected hair may be the cause of DCS.
What are the symptoms of Dissecting Cellulitis of the Scalp?
- It starts on the scalp vertex as a folliculitis leads to patches of perifollicular pustules, nodules.
- Nodules are expressed with pus and serous fluid.
- Keloidal scars obtain in the affected area.
- There may be occurance of musculoskeletal problems and arthropathy with dissecting cellulitis of the scalp.
- Loss of hairs take place.
- Regression of nodules and resolution of pain also take place.
Dissecting Cellulitis of the Scalp Treatment
- Radiation therapy is use for the treatment of DCS.
- Systemic antibiotics, local antiseptics, and possibly large doses of oral isotretinoin these are some another treatments.
- Surgery is the other way of treatment.
- There are some other medical therapies available such as antibiotic soaps, dapsone, intralesional kenalog 10-40mg/cc, zinc supplements, tetracycline-type antibiotics and prednisone 40-60mg/day.
- Recently a new technique is found which has name laser therapies.
- Destructive therapies like X-ray therapy, surgical excision, and skin grafting are used..
