What is Crohns Disease?
Crohns Disease is a long lasting inflammatory disorder commonly known as the disorder of intestinal tract which is mostly occur in the lower part of the small intestine called the ileum, but it can affect any part of the body. It is also knwon as the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, granulomatous enteritis or colitis, ileitis or enteritis. Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, together they are referred as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Crohns Disease was discovered by Dr. Burrill B. Crohn in 1932, hence the name.
About 1 in 1,500 people have Crohn’s disease. Crohns Disease can occur in people of all age group ( males and females equally) especially young adults in the ages of 20 to 30. Sometimes it continue in families. 20 percent of people with Crohn's disease have a blood relative with some form of IBD.
Causes of Crohns Disease
- body’s immune system reacts abnormally in people with Crohn’s disease
- Crohn's disease is not contagious, but it does have a slight genetic (inherited) tendency.
- Some scientists think that a protein produced by the immune system, called anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF), may be a possible cause for the inflammation associated with Crohn’s disease.

- Various drugs are available to treat this disease:
- Anti-inflammatory drugs like Sulfasalazine, Asacol, Rowasa, etc.
- Immune System Suppressors such as azathioprine, Purinethol, 6-mercaptopurine, etc.
- Antibiotics like Metronidazole, ampicillin, cipro, etc.
- Corticosteroids like prednisone and methylprednisolone, etc.
- Other medications such as laxatives, pain killers, antidiarrheal drugs, 5-ASA medicine, etc ae also required in some cases.
- Dietary factors: Nutrition supplements (such as calcium, folate and vitamin B12 ), liquid diet, low-fat diet are also recommended.
- If the disease is severely affected, then we use intravenous (IV) medications.
- Surgery is required in complicated cases such as abscess formation, blockage of the bowel or when bledding starts. Sometimes after surgery also, Crohn's disease can reoccur itself.
