What is Contact Dermatitis Irritant?

Contact Dermatitis Irritant is a non-allergic, inflammatory skin rash due to the direct contact of the skin with strong irritating substances such as soaps, detergents, acids, alkalis and organic solvents (present in nail varnish remover) commonly seen around the hands and the areas that directly come into contact with irritants. Other causes may include frequent hand washing, dry air and repeated exposure to water. It can result into red, painful, itchy, swollen, dry, thickened, rashes or blisters on the skin. Usually the people working in the areas such as building construction, hairdressing, cleaning, metal engineering and wet-work industries can easily get this disease. Women are mostly affected than men.

  • Best treatment is to avoid or remove the irritants and clean the affected area with mild antibiotic soaps.
  • Corticosteroid tablets, creams, ointments, compresses may be used to reduce inflammation.
  • In some cases wet dressing and anti itching creams can be recommended.
  • Antibiotics may also be used to prevent secondary infections.
  • Sometimes doctor may prescribe emollient, or moisturising creams to be applied directly to the wet skin after bathing, atleast for two weeks, to protect the skin.
