What is Coccidioidomycosis?

Coccidioidomycosis is a lung and skin disorder caused by inhaling the dust particles, produced due to human activities and natural disasters, of a fungus called coccidioides immitis generally found in the soil and desert regions of certain parts of the southwestern U.S., Mexico, and Central and South America. It can also affect internal organs, joints, and bones. It can bring disorders such as lung infection, joint pain, fever, chills, arthritis, headache, cough, etc. Other effects can be seen are inflammation near the eyes, spores in lungs, painful red rashes on legs, mental disorder, flu-like disorder, chronic pulmonary infection in HIV patients, etc.

It is also known by the names valley fever and California valley fever, San Joaquin valley fever, coccidiosis, desert fever, Posadas-Wernicke disease, San Joaquin fever.

  • Because it is an easy going disease there is no special treatment is required.
  • Bed rest for mild cases is the most common prescription for this disease.
  • For severe cases and for pregnant women anti fungal agents such as intravenal amphotericin B, itraconazole, or fluconazole (oral) may be given as a part of the treatment.
  • In rare cases surgical excision or drainage may also be recommended to remove the affected portions of lung, skin or bone.
