What is Churg Strauss Allergic Granulomatosis?
Churg Strauss Allergic Granulomatosis is a rare, long-lasting, multi-organ disorder due to inflammation of blood vessels of the lungs restricting blood circulation to other parts of the body. These blood vessels are smell arteries and veins. It is most commonly seen in the people suffering from asthma and allergic disorders. It leads to abnormal processing of immune system, abnormal clustering of some white blood cells, and formation and accumulation of large number of antibodies along with fever, weight loss, difficulty in breathing, etc. It also brings chest and abdominal pain, diarrhea, coughing, skin sores, etc. It is non-contagious and non-heritable. It was discovered by two physicians - Jacob Churg and Lotte Strauss in 1951.
Other names include allergic granulomatosis, allergic granulomatous angiitis, Churg-Strauss syndrome, eosinophilic granulomatous vasculitis, allergic granulomatosis and angiitis, Churg-Strauss vasculitis.

- Usually in mild cases high doses of corticosteroids such as prednisone or prednisolone can be prescribed to reduce the inflammation.
- High doses of corticosteroids can lead to side effects such as high blood pressure, infection, sleep disturbances, and bone loss, so the doctor may prescribe gradual reduction in the drug dose.
- For some people immunesuppressing drugs such as cyclophosphamide or methotrexate can be considered as effective to prevent abnormal functioning of immune system.
- In severe cases involving other organs such as heart and kidney, the combination of steroid treatment and chemotherapy may be considered.
- In some other severe cases a bone marrow transplantation may also be considered.
