What is Blastomycosis North American ?
Blastomycosis (blas-to-my-co-sis) is a rare chronic, granulomatous, multi-system skin infection caused due to the fungus called blastomyces dermatitidis usually found in the wood and soil. It brings skin and respiratory infection and also affects the organs such as lungs, bones. It can also lead to fever, cough, difficulty in breathing and chills. It was discovered by Gilchrist in 18941 and 1896. It commonly affects the males of age 30 to 50 years who come into contact with soil and wood.
Other names for Blastomycosis are Gilchrist's Disease, North American Blastomycosis, Chicago Disease.
Causes of Blastomycosis North American
- inhalation of the conidia, which transform into the yeast form once in the lungs.
- The mold occurs in sandy, acid soils near river valleys or other waterways.
What are the symptoms of Blastomycosis North American ?

- coughing,
- shortness of breath,
- exercise intolerance,
- enlarged lymph nodes
- appear as ulcerated lesions with small pustules at the margins

Blastomycosis North American Treatment
- Anti fungal agents such as ketoconazole (nizoral) taken orally, amphotericin B taken internally and itraconazole can be prescribed.
- Hydroxystilbamidine, voriconazole are the other possible nitrifying agents to treat the blastomycosis.
- Anti fungal herbs such as citrus seed extract, garlic, tea tree oil etc can be recommended.
- A diet having food of less sugar, honey and fruit juice, products of vitamin-C, E, A+ and B complex and also uncooked and unprocessed food products, can play a very important role in treating the blastomycosis.
