What is Behcets Disease ?

Behcets Disease is also known as Behcet's syndrome, Morbus behcet, silk road disease, adamantiades, aphthosis behcet or bipolar aphthosis. Behcets Disease is a rare chronic, multi-system vascular, autoimmune, relapsing inflammatory disorder leading to painful mouth and genital ulcers, blood vessel damage, inflammation of eyes. It is most commonly seen in men than in women, at any age. It was first discovered by a Turkey dermatologist Dr. Hulusi Behcet in 1937. hence the name of the disease.

Causes of Behcets Disease

  • The exact cause is still unknown.
  • Inflammation of blood vessels is the main possibility.
  • Viral infection in some people who have hereditary problems can be the cause.
  • Autoimmune mechanism of the people may bring the behcets disease.
  • Environmental factors, chemicals or heavy metals are other possibilities that can lead to this disease.

What are the symptoms of Behcets Disease ?

  • inflammation
  • affect the veins that take the blood back to the lungs to replenish the oxygen content
  • problems with hearing and/or balance,
  • Weight loss
  • Generalized weakness
  • Headache
  • swelling of the spinal cord, and
  • intestinal complications

Behcets Disease Treatment

  • Topical medicines such as gels, ointments or creams, that can be directly applied to the affected area, can be prescribed to reduce inflammation and pain.
  • Corticosteroids such as Prednisone are useful to reduce body pain and inflammation of the people who are suffering from severe joint pain, central nervous system symptoms, eye problems.
  • Immunosuppressive drugs such as azathioprine, chlorambucil etc can be the effective medicines to control the over reactive immune system.
  • Anti-TNF agents such as infliximab, etanercept are also effective.
  • In rare cases non–immunosuppressive medications such as colchicine may be considered to be effective.
