Aspergillosis - Symptoms, Causes, Treatment and Home Remedies

What is Aspergillosis ?

Aspergillosis is an infection caused due to a fungus called Aspergillus creating allergy commonly on skin, nasal sinuses, lungs and ears of the people in the reduced immune system such as people on chemotherepy. It is a severe respiratory disease found in the young chickens and turkeys. The responsible fungus Aspergillus is normally found on dead leaves, stored grain, compost piles, soil, or in other decaying plants or household dust, air conditioning systems and hospitals.

There are three types of Aspergillosis :

  • Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) or pulmonary aspergillosis
  • Aspergilloma
  • Invasive aspergillosis

Causes of Aspergillosis

  • The main cause is the fungus Aspergillus.
  • Another possibility is the inhalation of airborne dust in building construction or renovation and contaminated biomedical devices.
  • It can occur in the people who are suffering from asthma, reduced immune system, cavity diseases, alcoholism and who are under chemotherapy and rarely in HIV persons.

What are the symptoms of Aspergillosis ?

  • People suffering from asthma can get allergic reaction.
  • Other possibilities are difficulty in breathing, fever, wheezing, blood in urine and cough, ill feeling, weight los.
  • In some cases chest pain, headache, chills, bone pain, vision problems, night sweat etc can be seen.

Aspergillosis Treatment

  • One treatment is scraping out the fungus and putting drops of antifungal drugs.
  • Antifungal drugs such as voriconazole, amphotericin B, flucytosine, amphotericin etc can be used to treat Aspergillosis.
  • If antifungal drugs fail to treat, then steroid pills or inhaler can be used.
  • Sometimes physiotherapy may recommended.
  • To eliminate respiratory infection, bronchodilators may be used.
  • In some cases surgical method is advised to remove infected heart valves.
