What is Alopecia Mucinosa ?
Alopecia mucinosa is a follicular mucinosis. This disease creates reddened papules or plaques with hair loss and boggy nodular masses. Alopecia mucinosa affected areas are face, neck and scalp or may be any part of the body gets affected. Possibility is primary (idiopathic) or secondary to mycosis fungoides or reticulosis.It is most commonly seen in children and young adults.
Causes of Alopecia Mucinosa
- Cause is unknown. But may be associated with circulating immune complexes and cell-mediated immunity. Mucinous material deposits itself and gathers in hair follicles and sebaceous glands, which produce an oily substance sebum to keep the skin supple, to create an inflammatory condition to reduce the ability of the affected follicles to produce hair.
- It is caused by mucinous infiltration of tissues.
What are the symptoms of Alopecia Mucinosa ?
- Main symptom is hair loss.
- Red papules or patches appear on face, neck and scalp.
Alopecia Mucinosa Treatment
- Topical corticosteroids are applied directly to the skin. Intralesional and systemic corticosteroids
are taken by mouth or by injection. These steroids are useful for inflammation reduction, regulation of protein, carbohydrate, lipid and nucleic acid metabolism, distribution and excretion of water and solutes,
- Oral antibiotics such as minocycline
which act as anti-inflammatory, to inhibit metalloproteinases, to reduce new blood vessel formation (angiogenesis) and programmed cell death (apoptosis).
- Topical and systemic photochemotherapy (PUVA), which is a type of ultraviolet radiation treatment that involves Psoralens (P) and then exposing the skin to long wave ultraviolet radiation (UVA).
- UVA1 phototherapy.
