Acne Vulgaris - Symptoms, Causes, Treatment and Home Remedies
Acne Vulgaris is a common form of acne, a inflammatory condition of the skin characterized by comedones, papules and painful lesions on the surface of the skin or pustules. It is caused by changes in the pilosebaseous units and tiny hair follicles on the face and body get clogged due to the excessive secretion of oils . It usually affects in teen and adults.
What causes Acne Vulgaris?
- It occurs when the pores of the skin become plugged
- Cosmetic agents
- Genetic or hereditary
- Some medicines like steroids, testosterone , estrogen, lithium can also trigger it.
- High levels of humidity and sweating
- It may trigger due to the eating of chocolate or greasy foods.

Treatment of Acne Vulgaris
- Treatment should be toward the known pathogenic factors like excess sebum, P acnes, and inflammation, hyperproliferation.
- Topical therapies such as retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, and antibiotics.
- Hormonal therapies (oral contraceptives) can also be used effectively
- Lotions containing following ingredientsshould be help in treatment :salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, niacinamide gel and tea tree oil.
Acne Vulgaris Medications
- Antibiotics such as minocycline, minocycline, trimethoprim, trimethoprim, erythromycin, azelaic acid, etc is very useful.
- Septicide cleanser for dry skin. It is effective bacterial control against P. acnes and other undesirable bacteria like Salmonella, E. coli, Staphylococcus, etc.
- Antibacterial cleanser such as Glycolic cleanser for excessively oily skin. It help to follicles clear of cellular debris and has minor antibacterial properties.
- Oral antibiotics taken by mouth such as doxycycline, minocycline and tetracycline.
Precautions and self care for Acne Vulgaris
- Don't touch your face with your hands or fingers.
- Keep your skin clean with non-drying soap.
- Treatment may take time to get acne control but keep trying the same treatment for 6 to 8 weeks. But avoid greasy cosmetics or creams.
