What is Acne Conglobata ?
Acne Conglobata is a severe acne characterized by burrowing, interconnecting abscesses, inflammation, blackheads and cysts ( filled with smelly pus) which results in scarring.
Causes of Acne Conglobata
The cause of acne conglobata is unknown. It can be increase through the thyroid medications and exposure to halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons like dioxins as well as androgen-based steroids may trigger it.
Symptoms of Acne Conglobata
It is more commonly occur in men between the age of 18 to 30 years. It usually appear on the face, upper arms, chest and neck.
Acne Conglobata Treatment
Treatment should be done with trained dermatologist and it requires regular check-ups.
- Antibiotics such as doxycline, erythromycin, minocycline and tetracycline.
- Isotretinoin (Accutane) is effective and given for the period of 16 to 20 weeks.
- Surgery is needed in the large nodules.
- Intralesional triamcinolone or cryotherapy is also used in some cases.
