Acute Stages of Rosacea - Rhinophyma
The final stage or rosacea
Rhinophyma is the result of untreated rosacea that involves the redness of the skin, pimples, and in the end think skin. Roscea is also associated with a greater production of sebum and flushing of the skin due to wind or temperature changes. If blood vessels constrict in the wrong way or dilate they develop into a disease that results in rhinophyma. It also involves inflammation that affects sebaceous glands. Veins that become congested also lead to the dilation of blood vessels. The skin thickens as rosacea progresses while external stimuli may also exacerbate this condition. They include stress, heat, changing temperatures, and adverse environmental conditions. It can also be aggravated by alcohol. Nasal passages become restricted that also leads to the deterioration in health. Also eyes may be affected as rosacea develops.
Disorders and rhinophyma
Disorders of gastrointestinal tract, poor diet, and vitamin deficiency may contribute to the development of rhinophyma. Squeezing blackheads may also be implicated in the progression of this condition.
Gender role implicated in rhinophyma
Such disease afflicts only men. It starts with lumps and oil glands overgrowth. It also involves redness that appears on the skin along with widened blood vessels and tumour like nodules. Its treatment should be as early as possible to prevent its progressing and can result in scarring as well as bleeding. Severe rhinophyma leads to a large nose that eventually may even collapse. Only surgery can correct rhinophyma. Cosmetic surgery can thicken the tissue that restores the previous appearance. At first any further advancement of rosacea should be stopped through treating the skin with lotions and cosmetics. These procedure are not able to reverse the condition and further treatment is necessary.
Therapies for rhinophyma
Rhinophyma is the last stage of rosacea that can be removed also using a laser. It affects mainly nose. The affected area needs can be treated with non-invasive procedures. Photodynamic therapies can also use a photosensitive substances that are applied to the affected areas while the light exposure can provoke a photodynamic reaction that takes place during the formation of molecular oxygen. The pathological tissues is removed while it is also a painless procedure. Also lasers or demabrasion can be used to treat rhinophyma.
Rhinophyma and its consequences
Rhinophyma needs to be treated with surgery although it is best if this stage of rosacea is avoided. Electrosurgical knife cuts the nose until the appropriate contour is obtained. There are various medications including antibiotics that are effective in the treatment of rhinophyma. This disfiguration involves an excessive amount of oil glands and is part of phymatous rosacea. Rhinophymas in rosacea include glandular, fibrous, fibroangiomatous and actinic. If rhinophyma is not prevented in time it can darken the teeth. It can also have adverse psychological impact leading even to depression.
Treatment options and side effect
If inflammation is present metranidazole or antibiotics may need to be applied. Surgery removes sebaceous glands that enhances the appearance of the nose. There are also various types of procedures available including total or partial excision. Side effects during the surgery may involve scarring.
