Is Metranidazole a Cure for Rosacea?

Metranidazole and its role in fighting infections

Metronidazole destroys bacteria that are involved in causing infections. It is a tablet that fights infection and can be used for various skin problems such as rosacea. It can create a metallic taste in the mouth, rash, headache and dizziness. It is useful in a topical treatment of rosacea that is part of formulations in form of gels or creams.

Fighting bacteria and parasites with metranidazole

Metranidazole is a synthetic drug that has been created in the 50s and used for infections caused by protozoa but later it was found to be effective against anaerobic bacteria. It is effective against anaerobic bacteria as well as certain parasites. This drug is now regarded as useful for antimicrobial drugs as well as treatment of infections caused by anaerobes and mixed flora.
Limitations and effectiveness in dealing with microbes
Metranidazole works through passive diffusion in the cell while metabolites are produced that damage the DNA of bacteria leading to its death. It can be active against pathogens that remain undivided. It cannot be used against aerobic bacteria due to its low oxidation-reduction.

Organism response to metranidazole treatment

It is absorbed very easily and remains unaffected by food. Its maximum concentration is after three hours. It can penetrate all tissues of the body and is excreted in the urine. Metranidazole is beneficial against anaerobic bacterias and used to fight infections that they cause. It penetrates all tissues along with central nervous system, and is useful even for serious infections including brain abscesses, infections of skin, soft tissue, bone, and joints.

Wide application and popularity are due versatility

Metranidazole is popular because it is effective in the treatment of pseudomembranus colities. It is also used for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis, reducing the risk of premature birth, helicobacter pylori, and situations with excessive bacteria growth. It is used to alleviate Crohn’s disease and given to treat gingivitis and periodontitis.

Other uses of metranidazole

Its topical use is effective in the treatment of dermatological conditions such as rosacea but it can also be beneficial in the treatment of syphilis.

Side effects

Its adverse side effects pertain mainly the central nervous system but only if given in high doses for a prolonged length of time. It can cause seizures, cerebellar dysfunction and peripheral neuropathy. It should be used carefully in those patients who have a history of nervous system disorders.

Other side effects with excessive usage

Metranidazole inhibits the metabolixm of warfarin and there are concerns that it can provoke the development of tumours. Studies also shown that it can lead to cancer if applied in high doses. Its long-term effects have not been yet studied. It should be avoided during pregnancy or breastfeeding as it may be excreted into breast milk.

Adverse effects and higher doses

Adverse effects also include nausea, diarrhea, and metallic taste in the mouth. It can also cause rash, headache, dizziness, vomiting, and paraesthesia. Higher levels can produce dry mouth, confusion, dysarthria, ataxia, abnormal eye movements.
