Scabbies symptoms and personal hygiene

Scabbies is caused by a type of mite. It can often be misdiagnosed because its symptoms may appear much later even a few months after the infection.  As the female burrows a tunnel in the human epidermis under the outer layer, where it lays eggs that hatch within 3 weeks, there a channel in the skin. Scabbies are contagious and can travel from person to person via clothes. Its most dangerous form is Norwegian scabbies that affect large areas of skin that may resemble psoriasis. Typically it occurs on hands, folds of skin around the navel, nipples and buttocks, elbow, nipples, and the groin. Children may also have it on their faces or feet. Scabbies also frequently occur among older people in home care centers. Contagion with scabbies may also occur via hand shake and it is not an indicator of hygiene.

Recognizing scabbies

Its symptoms is itching that is most severe at night resulting from activation of parasite due to warm sheets. Scratching also exacerbates itching and subsequent bacterial infections occur. The skin rash also appears in certain areas that is vesicular.

Allergies can be mistaken for scabbies

People with good hygiene may have additional symptoms that resemble allergies. In this form it may even be more serious because this disease when unrecognized remains contagious.

Methods to tread scabbies

Most common treatment involve application of 5 per cent permethrin ointment to cool and dry the skin. Such ointment is placed on the entire body including the groin, hands, feet, and toes. This medicine should be left for up to eight hours and needs to be applied again after a week or two.

Applying creams for scabbies

Permethrin is considered safe for children but needs to be accompanied by antihistamines.

Scabbies treatment involves rubbing in a cream that contain lindan or appropriate gel at night after taking bath. A doctor needs to be consulted that can advise on the best treatment that usually lasts three days. Sheets should be changed daily while clothing should be ironed. Those that live in the same household need to undertake the same therapy.

Hygiene as part of treatment application

When undertaking treatment all clothing and sheets should be washed in hot water. Such clothing should not be used for about two weeks. Scabies can survive up to four days outside human skin while their life cycle is three weeks. Treatment can consist of both oral and skin application and can be in the form of ointments, gels, and tinctures.

Other homemade methods to deal with scabbies

Natural methods also indicate washing clothes while taking herbs externally to wash infected skin with thyme, caraway, lavender, and common wormwood. Herbs taken internally may include valerian. Herbs should be used according to the recommendation of your doctor. There are also essential oils that are applied such as Tea Tree oil, vinegar that is applied on infected areas, and turmeric paste that can also be applied on areas infected with scabbies. Turmeric paste includes turmeric mixed with edible oil or flour and milk.
