What is Pilonidal cyst?

Pilonidal cyst is a painful cyst which occurs when ingrown hairs push into the folds of the skin and it is commonly occurs near the tailbone area, it may also occur in other part of the body which may include the navel or the armpit but in rare cases. It is most commonly occurs in the adulthood or that age may be under 30 years and it may occur rarely after 40 year.

Causes of Pilonidal cyst

Pilonidal cyst occurs because ingrown hair which push in to the folds of the skin. It mostly occurs in the buttock crease near the area of tailbone therefore it may also cause to them who sit for prolonged periods of time on their job. The cause of this cyst may include risk factors like existence of a deep natal cleft, and presence of hair within the natal cleft.

Symptoms of Pilonidal cyst

The symptoms of pilonidal cyst may include following-

  • lumps over  the tailbone in the buttock crease
  • Pain, Redness and swelling at the bottom of the spine
  • Draining pus with foul odor
  • fever

Treatment of Pilonidal cyst

Treatment may be varying for each individual because pilonidal cyst is unique to the person affected and treatment is depends on the symptoms. In normal cases regular saving may resolve the problem and if it is painful soaking in a warm tub baths may help relieve the pain. These cysts don’t require dietary therapy or restriction of daily activities.
Firstly it should be treated by normal simple incision and drainage and if it is recur then you may go for surgical treatment.  Surgical treatment involve and draining infected cysts and cutting away skin and flesh that cover any dimples or pits that could potentially develop into abscesses. Antibiotics are not the important treatment for theses cysts but it may supplement to the surgical drainage.
