Neuroma
Neuroma develops from the nerve or ganglion cells, nerve fibers or the perineural sheath. It is usually a single nodule occurring along a nerve, flesh - or reddish - colored and tender to the touch.
What is Neuroma?
Neuroma is a noncancerous tumor develops in nerve cells and fibres. It may occur in any part of the body but mostly occur pain in the sole of the foot. A neuroma is often accompanied by radiating pain.
Causes of Neuroma
- pulling of the ligaments under the foot which irritate the nerve
- nerve can be damaged because of high hills
- over pronation is a condition which disturbs normal walking pattern
- Toes may get squeeze because of tight toe box and therefore put pressure on the nerve.
Symptoms of Neuroma
- numbness or tenderness in the foot
- pain, numbness, burning and tingling sensations around the foot
- Severe pain may appear at weight bearing
Patient may experience spontaneous shooting pains in night at sleeping time.
Diagnosis of Neuroma
The differential diagnosis is made from neurofibromatosis. Histopathology exhibits numerous bundles of myelinated nerves in the dermis surrounded by fibrous tissue.
Treatment for Neuroma
The treatment consists in removing the neuroma surgically; only an expert surgeon should do this lest the nerve be cut accidentally.
