Milium
Milium is a very common disorder. It usually occurs in large numbers on the face and less so on the genitalia. In the former case, milia occur on the eyelids, below the eyes, cheeks, temples and forehead.
Symptoms ans signs of Milium
They are multiple in number, and about the size of pin-head or millet seed, being pearly-white in color. They are globoid in shape, have a firm consistency and are slightly elevated. When punctured, a whitish substance is expelled resembling the kernel of rice. The lesions are asymptomatic; even so, they can become a problem with sensitive people who consider them cosmetic blemishes.
Cause of Milium
The cause is unknown. They are considered to be simple epithelial cysts or represent the encysted retention of sebum and hair cells. Milia are commonly seen on the scars of epidermolysis bullosa and pemphigus etc. They occur in infancy or middle-age.
Differential diagnosis of Milium
It is made from vesicles, acne comedones, molluscum contagiosum and other cystic tumors.
Prognosis: It is fair.
Treatment of Milium
It is necessary only in sensitive people who are self-conscious. It consists in:
- Puncturing the cystic tumor with a fine needle and pressing out the contents.
- Destruction by electrolysis needle.
