Leiomyoma

Leiomyoma develops from the arrector pili muscle, and is a very rare disease.

Multiple, cutaneous tumors occur as brownish, papular lesions on the face, neck and extensor surfaces of the limbs, while the subcutaneous tumor originating from the dartos muscle of the scrotum occurs as a large, single lesion. Leiomyomata are usually painful.

Leiomyoma is a benign smooth muscle tumor which may cause abnormal menstrual patterns or infertility. A tumor comprised of smooth muscle fibers. It may occur in any organs but it is mostly occurs in the uterus or gastrointestinal tract. Leiomyoma is a technical term for fibroid tumor. Cutaneous leiomyomas are mostly common in adults than women. There are various type of leiomyoma such as Multiple piloleiomyomas, Solitary piloleiomyoma, Angioleiomyoma (solitary) and Genital leiomyoma (solitary).

Causes of Leiomyoma

The cause of Leiomyoma is unknown.

Symptoms of Leiomyoma

  • Sensation of fullness
  • pressure in lower abdomen
  • Pelvic cramping or pain with periods
  • Increase in urinary frequency
  • severe pain due to a pedunculated fibroid
  • Increase in urinary frequency

Histopathology consists of interlacing bundles of smooth muscle fibers with elongated nuclei.

Treatment for Leiomyoma

Treatment is unsatisfactory. Punch grafts may sometimes be helpful. Solitary lesion can be excised.
