What is Dermoid Cyst?

Dermoid Cyst is a benign type of ovarian tumor normally present at birth. It is mostly occurs in the head or neck and rarely in the face. It is also known as dermoid, dermoid tumor. These cysts consist of hair, parts of teeth or bone, fatty tissue, etc. They may grow to the large size. There are no sex prediction about dermoid cysts if dermoid cyst is of the ovary then it is mostly occurs to the female. Dermoid cyst may occur at any age.

Dermoid Cyst is seen at the sites of fusion of branchial clefts and develops due to inclusion of embryonic epidermal structures in the subcutaneous tissue. It consists of a cystic tumor containing hair, hair follicles and sebaceous glands etc.

Causes of Dermoid Cyst

  • dremoid cyst may occur because of hereditary
  • it may occur because of trapping of skin and skin structures at the time of fatal development.
  • sequestration of skin along the lines of embryonic closure may responsible for dermoid cyst.

Symptoms of Dermoid Cyst

Symptoms may occur differently from children to children. Followings are the symptoms which may occur in the dermoid cyst-

  • Small and painless lump in the neck
  • These cysts may be of skin coloured or may have slight yellow tinge.
  • Symptoms of these cysts may also occur other neck masses or medical problem.

Treatment of Dermoid Cyst

Treatment is surgical excision.
